PARK INFORMATION:

A place of exceptional beauty where one can explore the rugged, unspoilt African landscapes, Mashatu game Reserve is an area of history and legend and makes for exciting game viewing. Situated in the remote eastern corner of Botswana, at the confluence of the Limpopo and Shashe rivers, it is and area of savannah, riverine forests, marshland, open plains and sandstone outcrops. Mashatu has the largest elephant population (almost 900) on private land in the world. The reserve gets its name from the enormous Mashatu trees, round-topped leafy giants, which occur throughout this immense tract of privately owned land.

The most popular activity in Mashatu is game viewing either in the comfort of open 4-wheel drive vehicles, on a walking safaris, on mountain bicycles, or horse back, guided by expert rangers and experienced trackers. Night drives are permitted to enable the visitor to witness rare and elusive nocturnal creatures such as aardwolf, caracul, porcupine, leopard, lynx and wild cat. The Game Reserve proudly provides a refuge for the largest, single population of elephant on privately owned land in Africa. Known as the relic herds of Shashe, these elephants are the last living testament to the great herds that once populated the meandering Limpopo valley.

This beautiful sanctuary is home to seven of Africa's giant phenomena: the Limpopo River, the African Elephant, the lion, giraffe, the baobab tree, the eland, the ostrich, the kori bustard and of course the endless African sky! Other popular wildlife includes: spotted hyenas, bat eared foxes, aardwolves, cheetahs, kudu, Burchell's zebras, bushbuck, baboons, spotted genets and civets, impala and steenbok. Over 350 bird species have been identified in the area.
